Poděbrady Castle
Замок Подєбради · Zámek Poděbrady · 1905–2026
Essence
Poděbrady Castle is a Czech historic landmark associated with King George of Poděbrady and the development of the spa town. During the interwar period it housed the Ukrainian Husbandry Academy, founded in 1922. The academy originally occupied the U krále Jiřího hotel before relocating to the castle. The precise relocation date and room assignments remain open archival questions; the building and educational institution are recorded as separate entities.

Identification, names and object type
Poděbrady Castle, Czech Zámek Poděbrady, is a real historical building in Poděbrady, at Jiřího náměstí 1, 290 01 Poděbrady. The Lázně Poděbrady website provides this public address; Polabské muzeum confirms that the Památník krále Jiřího z Poděbrad memorial is in the castle's second courtyard. The map should use the specific building's geometry and verified address, rather than coordinates copied from unchecked files. [PC01; PC02]
R0071 is the place / building, while the Ukrainian Economic Academy (R0035) is an educational organisation, and the Ukrainian Technical-Economic Institute a separate related institution. They cannot be replaced by one geographical label without historical-period and use-type fields. [PC03]
A Czech historical monument before the Ukrainian period
The castle developed from a medieval fortified complex on the Elbe associated with Přemysl Otakar II and King George of Poděbrady. Its present appearance results from many reconstructions and adaptations. The town's spa website describes it as an architectural landmark and part of the urban heritage zone; today it houses a memorial exhibition dedicated to the Czech king. [PC01; PC04]
The castle's history is considerably older than the Ukrainian Economic Academy. A future website should create several interconnected but independent chronological layers: medieval architecture and Czech statehood, the spa town's emergence, Ukrainian education in the 1920s–1930s and present museum use. This makes the site more interesting for Czech readers without reducing its history to Ukrainian presence alone. [PC01; PC04]
Beginning of the spa era
In 1905, a mineral spring was discovered in the castle complex, which the spa company connects with the beginning of the modern therapeutic spa's history. Local tradition mentions the first “pramen Poděbradky”. The editorial map must distinguish the spring from historical teaching rooms: even within one complex, their purposes and evidence differ. [PC01; PC04]
The spa town's appeal partly explains why space was found for a new Ukrainian higher school in 1922. However, this is an analytical conclusion about context, rather than an established motive of its organisers. The source-based history also concerns the ability to obtain premises quickly and assistance from the local secondary agricultural school. [PC05]
Ukrainian emigration after 1917–1921
After the defeat of the independence struggle, Ukrainian intellectuals and former servicemen sought opportunities to continue studying in Czechoslovakia. With the Ukrainian Civic Committee's participation (R0039) and Czechoslovak authorities' support, a decision emerged to create an independent technical-economic academy. A Czech historical survey notes that Tábor, Roudnice, Chrudim and Brno were also considered, but practical conditions favoured Poděbrady. [PC05; PC03]
The commission discussed the project with Czechoslovak institutions; the school's statute was approved on 16 May 1922, and lectures began on 22 June. The castle should not be called the initial address of founding meetings unless minutes establish this unambiguously. These are separate approved_statute and began_teaching events in the digital chronology. [PC05; PC06]
Hotel U krále Jiřího — the academy's first premises
Bohdan's Czech study explicitly states that the Ukrainian Economic Academy's first location was the Hotel U krále Jiřího. Only later did the academy move into Poděbrady Castle. This sequence is among the historical map's most important clarifications: attaching all of 1922 to the castle would be premature. [PC05]
An exhibition or memorial plaque in the castle does not prove a specific relocation date. Identification requires municipal leases, accounts, old town plans, timetables and local archival photographs. At present it is safe to describe successive use of the hotel and then the castle, without naming an unestablished month or building wing. [PC05; PC03]
The castle as higher-education infrastructure
The Ukrainian Economic Academy's attested use of the castle makes it a key site of Ukrainian technical education abroad. The Czech National Library describes the academy as an independent private polytechnic with three faculties and a library; students came from different Ukrainian regions, and teaching staff included Ukrainians and Czechs. [PC03; PC06]
However, this does not mean that all institutional functions — library, dormitories, classrooms, laboratories and apartments — were physically located in the castle. A tourist map can show the academy's general centre while marking rooms and functions ROOM_ASSIGNMENT_UNVERIFIED. This removes the risk of an attractive but untrue 3D reconstruction. [PC03]
Books, publishing and professional language
Alongside teaching, the academy supported publishing. An association of students and lecturers formed in 1922, printing books, journals and collections in economics, law, sociology, chemistry, architecture, hydrology and forestry. The Slavonic Library catalogue lists 786 admitted students over the academy's entire existence and 118 lecturers in its first ten years; these cannot become simultaneous castle classroom attendance. [PC03]
A digital exhibition can show a technical manual scan, historical castle photograph and present courtyard view. This three-part composition conveys the building's intellectual value better than a random stylised illustration presented as a historical photograph. Every book requires a bibliographic record, scan of a specific copy and licence. [PC03; PC09]
Current condition and public accessibility
Current public sources identify the castle at Jiřího náměstí 1; Polabské muzeum locates King George's memorial exhibition in the second courtyard. Opening hours can change, so they should be provided in a separate service block with an update date. The research dossier must not turn them into “open now” without checking. [PC01; PC02]
Once photographic rights and building geometry are confirmed, a virtual walk can let users switch between Czech, Ukrainian and English versions, showing two layers: castle architecture and the Ukrainian Economic Academy. Specific premises require historical plans; labelling a “Shovheniv classroom” without documentation is blocked.
Cartography, protection and digital materials
The precise locator object is Zámek Poděbrady, Jiřího náměstí 1, 290 01 Poděbrady. This publicly accessible building address is confirmed by public sources. Unlike people's homes or children's activities, geocoding the castle itself is possible after comparison with the cadastral address and heritage register; the current coordinates field remains empty until then. [PC01; PC02]
Recommended media include the façade, both courtyards, the academy memorial plaque (confirm inscription and installation date), a historical student group photograph, a newspaper reference to the start of lectures, castle plan and technical textbook page. Rights held by photograph owners, museum collections and old maps are not automatically open. [PC03; PC05]
