ARCHIVAL TRANSPARENCY / AUDIT FINDINGS

Public Corrections & Fact-Check Log

A public register of corrected mistakes, refuted myths, source contradictions, and verified biographical evidence.

9All records 3Refuted connections 5Source contradictions 1Verified by source

Scholarly integrity requires transparent recording of contradictions between sources, refuted conflations (e.g. distinct publishers or journals), and verified historical facts.

Assertion or relation:

«The Chas publisher (R0053) is the same as other Prague émigré publishers (Siyach, R0052; Proboiem, R0055).»

Audit conclusion:

Refuted in dossiers R0052 and R0055: they are distinct publishers (distinct_prague_publisher / not_same_publisher_as).

Editorial explanation & sources:

According to dossier R0053, Chas was founded in Kyiv in 1908 and opened a Prague line in 1919 (imprint "Kyiv—Prague", historical address Smíchov, Karlova 13). The dossier separates Chas from other émigré publishers and journals (Knyhar, Knyholiub R0089).

Source contradictions

Assertion or relation:

«The building with Puluj’s memorial plaque in Smíchov has house no. 1268 and the address Preslova 15.»

Audit conclusion:

The conflict is open: house no. 1268 agrees across sources, but the street number is Preslova 15 (PU01) versus Preslova 5 (PU02).

Editorial explanation & sources:

The "Pamětní desky v Praze" catalogue (PU01) and dossier R0001 give Preslova 15; the history-of-science atlas (PU02) gives Preslova 5. Preslova 5 in PU04 is the contact address of a municipal office, not evidence of the plaque’s address. The address conflict is left for cadastral and field verification.

Assertion or relation:

«Birth year of Oleksandr Oles — 1979 (or 1879).»

Audit conclusion:

Source discrepancy recorded in dossier R0018: 1878 is used, and the sources’ technical error is retained in the dossier.

Editorial explanation & sources:

According to dossier R0018, the embassy’s official notice gives 1879, ESU gives 1878, and a Czech page even gives 1979. The dossier recommends using 1878 and retaining the source error as a recorded discrepancy.

Assertion or relation:

«Oleksandr Oles maintained close personal friendship with President T. G. Masaryk.»

Audit conclusion:

Refuted as unproven: archival records show no direct personal correspondence or private meetings.

Editorial explanation & sources:

Oles’ poem in memory of President Masaryk proves literary admiration, not personal friendship. The edge is categorized as thematic context rather than verified personal correspondence.

Source contradictions

Assertion or relation:

«Ivan Puljuj was awarded his doctorate in Strasbourg in 1876.»

Audit conclusion:

Source discrepancy: 1876 (corpus) vs 1877 (Encyclopedia of Ukraine).

Editorial explanation & sources:

The Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU) records 1877 as the year of Puljuj’s doctoral defense at the University of Strasbourg under August Kundt. University register verification pending.

Source contradictions

Assertion or relation:

«Ivan Puljuj served as rector of Prague’s German Polytechnic in 1888/1889.»

Audit conclusion:

Open discrepancy: dossiers R0001 and R0075 date the rectorship to 1888/1889; an external source (IEU) gives 1899–1900 and links 1888/89 to the deanship.

Editorial explanation & sources:

The corpus still contains 1888/1889 (R0001, source P03; R0075: "1888–1889 rectorship"). The IEU data do not change the corpus: the discrepancy needs checking against university records and is not treated as corrected.

Source contradictions

Assertion or relation:

«Sofiya Rusova taught at the Ukrainian Pedagogical Institute until 1933.»

Audit conclusion:

Discrepancy: corpus states 1923–1933, while IEU cites 1924–1939.

Editorial explanation & sources:

The Drahomanov Institute was gradually phased out in the early 1930s. Some historians date Rusova’s tenure to 1933 (institutional closure), while others count private lecturing through 1939.

Verified by source

Assertion or relation:

«Ivan Horbachevsky is buried at the Šárka Cemetery in Prague-Dejvice.»

Audit conclusion:

Verified by source: The Czech Biographical Dictionary (HIÚ) explicitly identifies Šárka cemetery.

Editorial explanation & sources:

Renowned chemist, health minister, and UFU rector died in Prague on 24 May 1942 and was laid to rest at the Šárka cemetery by St Matthew’s Church.

Assertion or relation:

«Oleksandr Oles is buried at the Olšany Cemeteries in Prague.»

Audit conclusion:

Refuted in present tense (burial lasted 1944–2017).

Editorial explanation & sources:

Following exhumation in Jan 2017 after plot lease expiration, the remains of the poet and his wife were solemnly reinterred on 29 Jan 2017 at the Lukyanivka cemetery in Kyiv. The Olšany location is now a site of memory, not an active grave.
