Chas – Ukrainian publisher in Kyiv and Prague
Видавництво «Час»: Київ і Прага · Čas – ukrajinské nakladatelství v Kyjevě a Praze · 1908–2026
Essence
Chas was a Ukrainian publishing house established in Kyiv in 1908. A Prague branch operated from 1919 under the initiative of Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi, issuing multilingual materials and imprints bearing Kyiv–Prague publication data. Its historical address in Smíchov must not be confused with the present-day Karlova Street in Prague’s Old Town. The branch’s legal status and precise print locations remain to be checked.

Whom and what we call the publisher Chas
Chas was a Ukrainian publishing organisation formed in Kyiv in 1908 that continued operating during revolutionary change. For the Česko × Ukrajina project, R0053 principally concerns its Prague branch activity in 1919–1920, which publishing historians associate with Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi. The organisation needs one history, but different branch addresses, periods and details; all Kyiv editions must not retrospectively be moved to Prague. [CH01; CH02]
The publisher Chas must also be distinguished from Knyhar, its book studies journal of 1917–1920, and from later organisations of the same name. A publication or periodical is the publisher's product, rather than another legally identical office in Prague. [CH03; CH04]
Background: the cooperative book in Kyiv
Early twentieth-century publishing in Ukraine combined education, national culture and entrepreneurial self-organisation. Chas became an example of Ukrainian-language books entering a wider reading space. Its initial repertoire and organisational roles changed with political conditions. [CH01; CH03]
The historical model must distinguish the year of the publisher's establishment, publication years of individual books and the year the Prague branch opened. Otherwise, the website's structure creates a false “Prague — 1908” chain when the organisation's original base was Kyiv. [CH01]
Revolutionary years and the journal Knyhar
In 1917–1920 the publisher issued the journal of bibliography and publishing Knyhar. The Ukrainian Library Encyclopedia describes it as an important instrument for surveying the Ukrainian book market; the Book Chamber catalogue gives the journal's years and issues. Editorial functions at different times are associated with Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi and Mykola Zerov. [CH03; CH04]
This journal is not Prague's Knyholiub (R0089), created much later by the Ukrainian Society of Book Lovers. Mistakenly equating Knyhar and Knyholiub distorts chronology, publishers and contributors. This should be a separate distinct_periodical_identity rule in the database. [CH03; KN01]
Transfer of international activity in 1919
Mariia Hrynko's historical publishing study describes the Prague branch organised by Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi in 1919. The publisher used Prague's printing capacity and intellectual contacts for books and pamphlets in Ukrainian, Czech and other languages. Some editions bear the imprint “Kyiv—Prague”. [CH01; CH02]
Such a dual imprint does not mean every copy was actually printed simultaneously in both cities. The imprint_cities field represents what appears on the title page; the actual printer must be established from the colophon, an invoice or an archive. “Where is the publisher based?” and “where did the printing press operate?” are two different research questions. [CH01]
The repertoire: explaining Ukraine to Czech readers
Chas's Prague activity involved publishing material presenting Ukrainian history, culture and recent statehood to European audiences. Czech-language pamphlets and publications in other languages went beyond an ordinary émigré bookshop. This allows the publisher to be considered an instrument of cultural diplomacy without legally equating it to the Ukrainian National Republic's diplomatic mission. [CH01]
A publisher's interest in political subjects does not mean a particular edition received state funding. A published_for_diplomatic_campaign relationship requires a contract, correspondence or an explicit statement on the title page. Most editions in this research wave lack such proof. [CH01; CH02]
A specific first edition from 1919
The Book Chamber of Ukraine's bibliographic index describes «Народній герой Симон Петлюра» with the imprint Kyiv—Prague, 1919. This is particularly valuable because a printed detail establishes that “Prague” is not merely a later biographical reconstruction. Further checks must establish the exact type of copy, dimensions, language, format and printer. [CH02]
The “Ukrainians in Prague” section can show a typed Publisher → Edition → Imprint: Kyiv–Praha chain, but not automatically Publisher → printing_house_at_modern_location. The bibliographic index provides important independent support, but the final catalogue needs a title-page facsimile for the record. [CH02]
Czech intellectual contacts
The themes of Chas's Prague publications included translations and texts on Ukrainian matters for Czech readers. Bibliographic overviews include titles associated with Czech musicologist Zdeněk Nejedlý and Ukrainian cultural organisations. A future record needs the author's name checked directly against the title page, with correct original Czech spelling. [CH01]
A missing publishing catalogue cannot be replaced with an approximate story of personal friendships among every figure mentioned. Evidence-based author_of, translated_by, issued_by and reviewed_in types suffice; personal contacts should be recorded only from letters or memoir testimony with a reliability assessment. [CH01]
Publishing partnerships and Shevchenko
Sources describe publications linking Ukrainian literature to a Czech context, including Taras Shevchenko's texts dedicated to Jan Hus. Their specific editorial connections to Stepan Smal-Stotskyi (R0021) need confirmation from each book's title-page details. The title Ivan Hus without author, year and editor is insufficient for forming an error-free relationship. [CH01]
This material offers an unusual website story: a Ukrainian poet writes about a Czech reformer, and a publisher in Prague in 1919 carries that image between cultures. The story's historical significance does not remove the requirement to verify the edition: a metaphor cannot become a factual graph edge without a source. [CH01]
The winding down of the Prague phase and its continuing legacy
Publications associated with the Prague branch are dated primarily 1919–1920. This establishes a working interval for the branch, rather than its exact legal closure date. That conclusion needs financial and registration documents, Koroliv-Staryi's letters or a local business registration. [CH01; CH02]
Publishing documents may be dispersed between Ukraine, Czechia and private archives. The digital project's role is to create a combined catalogue and verification route, rather than declare the entire print run lost or every publication Prague-based from a single mention. [CH01]
