Vsesvit – Ukrainian publisher in Prague
Видавництво «Всесвіт» у Празі · Vsesvit – ukrajinské vydavatelství v Praze · 1918–2026
Essence
Vsesvit was a Ukrainian cooperative publishing initiative established in Prague in 1919. A documented imprint is Dmytro Doroshenko's Hungarian Ukraine (Prague: Vsesvit, 1919), number one in an informational series. A Kyiv archival collection bears the same publisher's name for 1919–1920; legal continuity or identity between the two entities has not been established. The Prague office address and closure date remain unverified.

The publisher's identity and the main question
The bibliography of Ukrainian emigration mentions Prague's Ukrainian Cooperative Publishing Society Vsesvit, established in 1919 on the initiative of Ukrainian writers and civic figures. This was an early Ukrainian publishing centre in Czechoslovakia, connected with the need to explain Ukrainian history and politics to Czech readers. [VS01; VS02]
R0054's central problem is distinguishing the Prague centre from the same-named Kyiv publishing society, whose TsDAVO archival fond 3576, inventory 1, covers 1919–1920. A similar name is insufficient legal proof of one organisation or shared statutes; the working graph will contain an explicit safeguard pending inspection of both societies' founding documents. [VS05]
Prague's situation in 1919
After the First World War and Ukrainian liberation struggles, Ukrainian diplomats and civic organisations sought channels for distributing reliable information about Ukraine. Czechoslovakia became a meeting place for Ukrainian émigrés, Czech intellectuals and publishing opportunities. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine identifies 1919 specifically as the start of Ukrainian book publishing in Bohemia through Vsesvit. [VS01; VS02]
The distinction between information work, cultural diplomacy and a publishing society's legal status matters. A diplomat helping find an author or printer does not mean the Ukrainian National Republic's diplomatic mission legally owned every publication. Title pages, invoices, contracts and minutes are required to check this. [VS03; VS04]
The first edition of Uhorska Ukraina as an anchor
The strongest specific bibliographic evidence of Prague Vsesvit's activity is Dmytro Doroshenko's «Угорська Україна», described by the Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine: Prague: Vsesvit, 1919, 31, [3] pages, series «Інформаційна українська серія», number 1. Another catalogue identifies the Prague printer Typografie Politiky. [VS04; VS07]
This supports a verified chain: author=R0020 → work=«Угорська Україна» → publisher=R0054 → publication_city=Praha → year=1919. The series number belongs to this particular edition; without a catalogue, numbers 2, 3 and beyond cannot automatically be reconstructed, nor a total of Vsesvit's books announced. [VS04]
Publishing series and information diplomacy
Doroshenko's pamphlet examines Transcarpathia's historical fate and the political context of 1919. Its series designation attests to an intention to inform readers systematically about Ukrainian subjects. However, researchers must distinguish the society's programme from publications actually located: one documented issue is insufficient for reconstructing a complete catalogue without error. [VS04; VS07]
Studies of émigré publishing mention Czech- and other-language publications among the tasks of Ukrainian Prague centres. A specific translation's imprint must be read before assigning it to Vsesvit rather than Chas or another publisher. Even books on the same information themes could be issued by different organisations. [VS02; VS06]
Printer, publisher and place of printing
The bibliographic record for Uhorska Ukraina gives not only the publisher but also Prague's Typografie Politiky. These are fundamentally different functions: the legally responsible publisher could commission an outside producer to print. The website needs separate published_by, printed_by and imprint_place fields. [VS07]
The printer's address should not automatically be geocoded from a single general name: the available record contains no present-day address equivalent. The printer's name and city are sufficient minimum information pending cadastral checks. [VS07]
Prague and Kyiv Vsesvit: different archival paths
TsDAVO lists fond 3576, named “Publishing Society Vsesvit, Kyiv”, with nine files for 1919–1920. Its description mentions statutes, minutes, publishing contracts and correspondence with the Ukrainian National Republic's Ministry of Press and Propaganda. The fond's name and geographical designation “Kyiv” do not establish that this is the same legal entity founded in Prague in 1919. [VS05]
Future archival comparison must examine full names, founders, registration places, minute dates and publishing trademarks. Only this combination can provide sufficient grounds for same_legal_entity_as or, conversely, a final distinct_from. The current priority is not to merge them. [VS05]
Relationships with other Prague publishers
An encyclopedia overview of publishing in Czechoslovakia mentions Vsesvit, Chas, Siiach, the Ukrainian Civic Publishing Fund and various institutional publications in the same environment. This is cultural and sectoral context, rather than proof of shared bookkeeping or legal succession. [VS02; VS08]
It is particularly important not to confuse the Vsesvit centre with the present-day Kyiv literary journal Vsesvit or other printers of the same name. Name searches must specify historical period, city and type of legal entity to prevent false-positive matches in the database. [VS02]
Scholarly value for the Ukrainian–Czech bridge
Vsesvit illustrates how Ukraine's intellectual émigrés in 1919 moved from diplomatic communications to a material book: author, cooperative, editorial office, printer, series and reader. Uhorska Ukraina provides a specific document with complete publication details that could anchor a multimedia story once copy rights are cleared. [VS04; VS07]
A well-prepared dossier should honestly reflect the narrowness of the present bibliography. Showing one reliably attributed copy and a plan for checking others is preferable to inventing hundreds of unknown books. This also enables correct integration with the already researched R0053 Chas.
