Siiach – Prague publishing society

Празьке видавництво «Сіяч» · Sijač – pražské vydavatelství · 1924–2026

Essence

The Prague publishing society Siiach was established in 1924 in the educational environment of the Mykhailo Drahomanov Ukrainian Higher Pedagogical Institute. It supplied Ukrainian-language teaching and scholarly material, including mathematics, philology and philosophy. Archival references identify its statutes and publication list. It is distinct from a namesake publishing house active in Cherkasy during 1917–1920.

Identity and control of organisations with the same name

Prague's publishing society Siiach emerged in the institutional environment of the Mykhailo Drahomanov Ukrainian Higher Pedagogical Institute (R0036). According to material from the Central State Archive of Public Associations and Ukrainica (TsDAHOU), its statutes are dated 17 May 1924. Publication lists, reports and textbooks survive, providing a material foundation for reconstructing its work. [SI01; SI02]

This Prague Siiach is not identical to the publisher of the same name in Cherkasy during the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1920. A shared name proves nothing about legal succession, management, accounts, personnel or transfer of an archive. For the website, this is a fundamental negative relationship and a reason not to merge book catalogues. [SI01; SI03]

Academic setting and educational purpose

Prague's Mykhailo Drahomanov Ukrainian Higher Pedagogical Institute was a principal centre for training Ukrainian teachers in emigration. Teaching in the native language required scholarly books, lecture notes, terminology guides and methodological courses. Siiach responded to a specific shortage of educational material and printing resources, rather than functioning as a large general commercial publisher. [SI01; SI02]

Its programme linked student self-organisation, professors' work and Prague's printing infrastructure. Teachers and students could act as authors, compilers, editors and distributors, but these roles must be recorded with references to a particular book's publication details. [SI01; SI04]

The statutes of 17 May 1924

The archival exhibition gives this reference for Siiach's statutes: TsDAHOU, fond 405, inventory 1, file 77, folios 1–3. This level of precision turns a general reference to the publisher into a verifiable archival task. However, this research wave used the description and information from the archival exhibition; full palaeographic inspection of every original folio is not claimed. [SI01]

The statutes should help establish the legal name, membership, governing bodies, terms for distributing funds and decision-making procedures. This structure cannot be reconstructed without reading the document: students' presence among participants, for example, does not imply exclusively student management. [SI01]

The first educational publications of 1924

The archive records teaching, note-taking and publication of teaching aids from 1924. A specific example is A. Honchariv-Honcharenko's general hygiene textbook, printed for the Ukrainian educational community in Prague. The electronic library of the Ukrainian diaspora catalogues this educational publication and offers an initial bibliographic reference point. [SI01; SI05]

Not every set of educational notes has the same status: a manuscript, lithographed course, duplicated typescript and printed book differ in technology and descriptive sources. The CMS needs reproduction_method, edition_type and publisher_credit, rather than replacing everything with “book”. [SI02; SI05]

The publishing list of 1926

An archival list as of July 1926 is exceptionally valuable for Siiach's history: TsDAHOU, fond 405, inventory 1, file 79, folios 1–2v. This document is the basis for a future table of publications with title, author, print run, price, printing method and repository. [SI01]

The list's contents should be reproduced line by line, retaining transcription_reviewed=false until images of the folios have been checked. An archival list does not mean every item mentioned survives as a complete copy; the publisher's catalogue and the list of surviving books are not identical. [SI01]

Mathematics, natural science and pedagogy

A course on probability calculation by V. Diakonenko appeared in one of Siiach's Prague publications in 1927. It shows the publisher working with mathematical disciplines for higher teacher education as well as the humanities. Catalogue details concerning date, authorship, format and length require comparison with the title-page information of a specific copy. [SI06]

Such material is important evidence of Ukrainian specialist terminology. An interactive website could offer a small dictionary of terms from Ukrainian textbooks of the 1920s and their contemporary equivalents. Long extracts from protected text should not, however, be reproduced without permission. [SI06]

Dmytro Chyzhevskyi and philosophical publishing

Siiach's Prague history intersects with Dmytro Chyzhevskyi's work. His «Фільософія на Україні» appears in bibliographic descriptions of the publisher; different catalogues may date it to 1928 or 1929 depending on publication details, the cover or the edition's description. Without checking the title page, a single year should not be imposed on every record. [SI02; SI07]

If separate editions or reprints are subsequently established, they should be described as distinct Edition objects with corresponding dates. Attributing an administrative position at Siiach to Chyzhevskyi solely because it published his book is unacceptable. [SI07]

Vasyl Simovych and the reader of 1932

Catalogues preserve «Хрестоматія з пам’ятників староукраїнської мови старого й середнього періоду (до кінця XVIII ст.)» by Vasyl Simovych, dated 1932 and associated with Prague's Siiach. This publication shows the programme's philological direction, in which an educational text also worked as a tool for developing scholarly language. [SI08]

The reader has a different function from a political journal or commemorative book. Its genre should be identified as an educational scholarly publication, clearly distinguishing author, editor, compiler and the owner of a library copy. [SI08]

How many books appeared: limits on quantitative claims

Studies of the pedagogical institute and its printed output give a total of 44 books, with a combined print run of approximately 5506 copies, and a substantial body of lithographed courses. Before mechanically attributing all these items to Siiach as a legal organisation, the publisher named on the title page, publishing society, institute printing and course material need to be distinguished. [SI02]

Two website counters are recommended: institute_publications_total as an aggregate quoted from the source, and Siiach_confirmed_imprints as copies actually checked against title pages. Until the second list exists, showing 44 as “exactly 44 Siiach books” would be methodologically incorrect. [SI01; SI02]

The archival and library trail

The Czech Slavonic Library preserves the Ukrainian pedagogical institute's archive as collection T-DRAH; archival descriptions provide a place for researchers to seek correspondence, finances and publishing documents. Ukrainian archival fonds contain statutes, catalogues and educational material. Together the two countries preserve complementary parts of one educational process. [SI01; SI04]

The website needs specific links to digital descriptions, but photographs and scans may have a separate access regime. The EDITORIAL_REVIEW / BLOCKED status concerns automatic publication of the entire research batch, rather than the publishing organisation's historical existence. [SI04]
