Natalena Koroleva – ukrajinská spisovatelka
Наталена Королева · 1888–1966
Essence
Natalena Koroleva (1888–1966) was a Ukrainian writer of historical and mythological prose. Encyclopedic biographies date her Prague diplomatic period to 1919; the preface to a 2003 bibliographical guide places her arrival in early 1920. Catalogues date the two parts of her Legends of Old Kyiv, published by Prague's Proboiem, to 1942 and 1943. She died in Mělník. The dates of her earliest publications and her precise grave location remain open questions.

Identity and limits of biography
Natalena Andrianivna Koroleva was a Ukrainian writer, researcher of ancient cultures and author of historical-mythological prose. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (ESU) gives her life dates as 3 March 1888 — 1 July 1966. For Czech–Ukrainian history, important elements are the diplomatic phase of 1919 described by encyclopedias, residence in Czechoslovakia, cooperation with her husband Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi, Prague Proboiem books and life in Mělník. The biobibliographic index's preface dates arrival in Prague to early 1920; the versions have not been reduced to one verified date. [NK01; NK02; NK07]
Her literary legacy has independent value: connected with Ukrainian emigration, but not exhausted by political biography, its themes span Rome, early Christianity, the European Middle Ages and mythological Kyiv. The dossier does not assign institutional membership without documents and distinguishes encyclopedic information from catalogued editions. [NK01; NK02]
Birth, cultural traditions and debate about origins
ESU gives her birthplace as the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña near Burgos in Spain, and IEU also names San Pedro near Burgos. Valentyna Perederii's preface to the 2003 index describes her mother's ancestral castle in the village of San Pedro. Radio Liberty also mentions a suggestion of Volhynia, without naming a specific supporting document. These formulations are attributed to their sources; neither a civil nor church birth record has been read. [NK01; NK02; NK04; NK07]
Her education and travels to Ukraine and beyond help explain the prose's multilingualism and historical specificity. Legendary biographical details should not, however, be used as confirmed facts; distinguishing autobiographical literary narrative from independent documentary records is particularly important. [NK01; NK03]
Education, archaeology and artistic competencies
According to ESU, she was educated at Notre-Dame de Sion in France, lived in Kyiv from 1904, completed the Institute for Noble Maidens in 1906 and attended lessons with Mykola Lysenko. The article also mentions studies at an archaeological institute in Saint Petersburg, artistic activity and participation in excavations at Pompeii and in Egypt. These are the reference work's biographical statements; archival diplomas and field diaries have not been read here. [NK01]
The research value of these details is to plan a verification hierarchy, rather than elevate every claimed qualification to the same evidentiary level: education registers, theatre posters, archaeological lists and historical letters. The website must not turn a “doctor” title into a contemporary academic equivalence without context. [NK01]
The Ukrainian People's Republic mission and move to Prague
ESU states that in 1919 Natalena Koroleva left for Prague with the Ukrainian People's Republic's diplomatic mission; the Vernadskyi National Library repeats this version. IEU also gives 1919 and work as a translator at the Prague mission. The 2003 index's preface describes another sequence: after her stepmother's death near Lviv, she reached Prague independently in early 1920 and began working in education. Whether these accounts concern different journeys is unproven. Employment status, mission personnel and exact arrival date have not been checked against primary lists. [NK01; NK02; NK03; NK07]
Her diplomatic episode must not be equated with Maksym Slavynskyi's Prague representation without a document of shared service. Presence in the same city at roughly the same time provides only a research hypothesis. An exhibition could compare the Ukrainian People's Republic's political history with cultural figures' private trajectories. [NK01; NK02]
Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi and literary cooperation
The writer's husband was Vasyl Koroliv-Staryi, a writer, civic figure and participant in émigré cultural life. ESU explicitly links her turn to Ukrainian-language writing with his influence. A family relationship does not mean co-authorship of every book, a shared publisher or identical political activity. [NK01]
The biographical graph needs a separate person entity for her husband after checking whether one already exists among the base 122 IDs; without a canonical number, only textual attribution is created. Secondary accounts give an ambiguous death year, so this dossier assigns no exact date without independent confirmation. [NK01; NK03]
«Легенди Старокиївські» and the Proboiem publisher
Direct National Historical Library of Ukraine records describe part 1 of «Легенди Старокиївські»: Prague, Proboiem, 1942, 98, [1] pp., «Книгозбірня Пробоєм», number 21 (86), and part 2: Prague, Proboiem, 1943, 76, [1] pp., number 22 (87). These are two parts of one work. Records nos. 8–9 in NK07's index also give 1942 and 1943, but its preface assigns both issues to 1942. The internal difference between preface and bibliography is not concealed. Catalogue confirmation of the publisher supports the R0055 relationship at the level of described editions. [NK05; NK06; NK07]
The catalogue records and relevant bibliographic descriptions have been read here; the 66.1 and 50.8 MB book files were not downloaded. Title pages, colophons and full texts have not been checked. The catalogue suffices for an attributed bibliographic card, but does not mean the book has been read or permission to reproduce scans obtained. [NK05; NK06; NK07]
Mělník and the final life phase
The writer died on 1 July 1966 in Mělník; this location forms part of actual Czech–Ukrainian cultural geography. Popular material about her final years contains recollections with an evidentiary status separate from civil documents. [NK01; NK04]
Radio Liberty names Mělník's municipal cemetery, while NK07's preface speaks of burial in the town. The official burial register has not been read: sector, grave number, coordinates and current condition are not established. A Prague — Mělník literary route can be shown at city level; these details do not provide an exact burial geopin. [NK04; NK07]
Historiography and value for a Ukrainian–Czech atlas
Her creative biography demonstrates unusual cultural movement: Western European experience, Kyiv, Ukrainian diplomatic institutions, Prague, Mělník and publishing centres in Lviv and the USA. The interactive atlas should nevertheless focus on how she worked with historical memory and language in emigration, rather than exoticising her person. [NK01; NK02]
The section can show two parallel chronologies: life and travel, and publication of works. Another narrative strand connects her with Prague's Ukrainian book networks, chiefly R0055, and with a careful overview of historical documentation about the Ukrainian People's Republic mission. Sources and legal statuses should be accessible in the interface without hidden assumptions. [NK05; NK06]
