Spyrydon Čerkasenko

Спиридон Черкасенко · 1876–1940

Essence

Spyrydon Cherkasenko (1876–1940) was a Ukrainian writer, playwright and educator. After working in Ukraine and Vienna, he developed educational theater and youth literature in interwar Uzhhorod, then part of Czechoslovakia. He later lived near Prague; sources give different relocation dates: 1927, 1929 or 1932. He was buried at Olšany Cemeteries; the precise grave location remains unverified.

Writer, teacher and a person of two cultural spaces

Spyrydon Cherkasenko (1876–1940) belongs to the Ukrainian writers and educators whose work passed through Donbas schools, Kyiv's cultural life, Ukrainian People's Republic state-building, Vienna emigration, Transcarpathia within Czechoslovakia and Prague's outskirts. His work encompassed poetry, prose, drama, children's textbooks and journalism. Literary and educational work were interdependent: plot, theatrical form and teaching text became means of developing Ukrainian language and education. [CH01; CH02]

This dossier does not reduce him to “a poet who died in Prague”. His Ukrainian connection with Czechia appeared primarily through activity in Subcarpathian Ruthenia, where Cherkasenko worked with educational and youth organisations, and his later residence near Prague. The relationship to Olšany Cemeteries is a separate memorial history that needs precise documentation and must not be confused with other people buried there. [CH01; CH02]

Novyi Buh and school as the biography's starting point

The Encyclopedia of Ukraine and academic dictionary «Педагоги України» date Cherkasenko's birth to 24 December 1876 in Novyi Buh. A Svoboda report of 1940 gives the same date, citing Yurii Siryi in Nastup. The Electronic Library of Ukrainian Culture (EBK) article and Lithuanian encyclopedia instead give 1 December. The Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine exhibition gives 11 December Old Style / 24 December, but the accuracy of this calendar conversion is not confirmed here; no new date is calculated from it. The birth record has not been read, so the discrepancy remains open. He completed teacher training at the Novyi Buh seminary in 1895 and began working in public elementary schools. [CH01; CH02; CH04; CH07; CH10; CH14]

Working with Donbas miners' children became especially important: according to the library reference, at the Lidiivka mines in 1901–1910. The broader Encyclopedia of Ukraine interval of teaching in the Donets Basin, 1899–1908, is not equated with the specific Lidiivka post. The mining region's experience appeared in early prose. Biographical sources date «На шахті» to 1909, while the Yaroslav Mudryi Library digital copy's catalogue gives [1907?]. The title page examined has no year: it names the Ukrainian publisher «Знаття-то сила», no. 2, Kyiv and the «Просвѣщеніе» society printing house at 27 Khreshchatyk. The title confirms these imprint details but does not resolve the year discrepancy; the whole book has not been read. Vernadskyi National Library catalogue CH05 concerns another book, «Вибрані твори» of 1929. [CH01; CH02; CH05; CH08; CH09]

Kyiv: from educational press to theatre

The library exhibition, EBK article and «Педагоги України» dictionary date Cherkasenko's move to Kyiv to 1910; the Lithuanian encyclopedia gives 1905. This discrepancy has not been reduced to one verified date. In Kyiv he worked with Svitlo, Rada and Ukrainian cultural centres, writing feuilletons, verse, prose and drama. The library exhibition also describes work with Mykola Sadovskyi's theatre after part of the Ukrainian press closed during the First World War. [CH01; CH02; CH04; CH07; CH14]

His drama cannot be understood solely as an illustration of political views. «Казка старого млина» and «Про що тирса шелестіла» demonstrate a combination of modernist techniques with Ukrainian historical and social subjects. Depending on the source, a year of composition or staging may differ from publication year; the database has separate work_composed, first_performed and first_published fields. [CH01; CH02]

Transcarpathia: theatre, Prosvita and children's culture

In 1923 Cherkasenko moved from Vienna to Uzhhorod, then in Czechoslovakia. He worked with Mykola Sadovskyi and the theatrical milieu and was active in Prosvita. The library exhibition and Lithuanian encyclopedia associate Uzhhorod activity with 1923–1929. The «Педагоги України» dictionary also dates the creation of Plast plays to 1923–1929, but separately dates a move to Horní Černošice to 1927. A period of creative activity is not equated with continuous residence in one city. [CH02; CH04; CH07; CH14]

Plays for adolescents including «Вечірній гість», «Лібуша в таборі», «Лісові чари» and «Бідний Лесько» had potential for amateur theatre and the Plast movement. The library article explicitly states the writer's cooperation with Plast, contributions to its press and an anthem for Transcarpathian scouts. The relationship to R0047 (Plast in interwar Czechoslovakia) can therefore be marked collaborated_with, rather than founded. The public narrative must specify Transcarpathia as part of contemporary Czechoslovakia, rather than Prague alone. [CH02]

Children's periodicals Pchilka, Vinochok and Nash ridnyi krai were a particular focus. The source mentions cooperation with writer Mariika Pidhirianka in compiling and publishing these journals. This is a specific documented professional contact, rather than proof of close friendship. A possible interactive scenario could show a children's play moving from an author's text to an amateur group and school stage. [CH02]

From Uzhhorod to Černošice: different moving dates

The Encyclopedia of Ukraine and library exhibition associate the move to Prague's outskirts with 1929; Nataliia Antonets's academic entry in the 2025 dictionary explicitly gives 1927, while UkrLib dates departure from Uzhhorod for Prague to 1932. The sources do not establish one sequence or prove several separate moves. The library biography links departure with a conflict with local administration, but the relevant order has not been read. The named locality Horní Černošice, near Prague, does not establish a particular residential address. [CH01; CH02; CH06; CH14]

His later material circumstances were modest, but he continued writing drama and prose. If the website publishes an “Uzhhorod — Horní Černošice — Prague” route, points should be shown at settlement level; a house, room or specific hotel is permissible only after archival or on-site verification. [CH02]

Historical dramas and a children's novel

In the late 1920s and 1930s, Cherkasenko worked on «Коли народ мовчить», «Северин Наливайко», «Ціна крові», «Еспанський кабальєро Дон Хуан і Розіта» and other dramas. According to the library article, «Северин Наливайко» was completed in 1928 and appeared in print in 1934. Composition and publication dates must be distinguished. It draws on Cossack history developed in Ukrainian culture, but direct retelling of Panteleimon Kulish's works does not replace its own theatrical reinterpretation. [CH02; CH04]

The historical-adventure novel «Пригоди молодого лицаря» (1937) is named in the library biography and Lithuanian encyclopedia. A separate Vernadskyi Library catalogue describes «Вибрані твори» of 1929: compiled by L. Dmytrova, illustrations by T. Moskaliova, Kharkiv: State Publishing House of Ukraine, 266 pp. Another record concerns volume 1 of the two-volume «Твори» of 1991; these catalogues do not replace reading the books themselves. Children's literature should be interpreted through pedagogy and literary history, without invented scenes of a particular episode being written in Černošice. [CH02; CH03; CH05; CH07]

Final years, death and remembrance

In 1939 the writer lived in a milieu affected by changes in Czechoslovakia and the fate of Carpathian Ukraine. The national library describes news of his son's death in 1939 as a personal tragedy; the son's identity and source must be established before showing precise circumstances of his death in a separate graph. [CH02]

The Encyclopedia of Ukraine, Lithuanian encyclopedia and academic dictionary date Cherkasenko's death to 8 February 1940 and name Prague. UkrLib gives 7 February; the EBK article states death on 8 February in Horní Černošice. Svoboda's report of 9 March 1940, retelling Yurii Siryi in Nastup, also gives 8 February; this is contemporary press, rather than a death certificate or confirmation of medical circumstances. The library exhibition and academic dictionary name Olšany Cemetery in Prague. A personal obituary signed M. Syvoshapka in Svoboda on 6 April 1940 narrates the burial, but names neither the cemetery nor exact day of death. The grave's sector, plot, number and current condition have not been checked; the relationship to R0070 remains at cemetery level without an exact geopin. [CH01; CH02; CH04; CH06; CH07; CH10; CH11; CH14]

A secondary publication's statement that the grave is “beside” other figures' graves proves neither physical adjacency today nor friendship with those people. It is particularly important that Oleksandr Oles's burial at Olšany ceased to be current in 2017 following reburial in Kyiv. His history must not be transferred to Cherkasenko's metadata, nor their proximity portrayed as a personal relationship. [CH02]
