Vasyl Bidnov
Василь Біднов · 1874–1935
Essence
Vasyl Bidnov (1874–1935) was a Ukrainian church historian and archivist. From 1922 he taught at the Ukrainian Free University in Prague and worked in Ukrainian institutions in Poděbrady. Sources date his move to Warsaw to 1928 or 1929; a Polish study describes his chair in the academic year 1928/1929. He helped found the historical and philological society. Archival captions describing correspondence were read, but the originals were not inspected. He died and, according to biographical sources, was buried in Warsaw; the precise grave has not been verified.

Biographical profile and research limits
Vasyl Oleksiiovych Bidnov (1874–1935) was a Church historian, archival scholar, bibliographer and educator. He was born in Shyroke and died in Warsaw on 1 April 1935. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (ESU) gives his birth as 2 (14) January; this is a calendar-style pair, rather than two verified birth dates. His Prague connection was chiefly academic. Teaching is dated from 1922, while the Prague period ends in 1928 or 1929. No precise personnel document establishes the transition. [VB01; VB07; VB08; VB09; VB12]
For the project, Bidnov connects the Ukrainian Free University (R0034), Economic Academy (R0035), Pedagogical Institute (R0036), society (R0041) and museum (R0040). Biographical sources describe different roles, which cannot be reduced to “founder of everything”. Archival captions provide specific leads but do not replace reading originals. [VB01; VB03; VB10]
Early studies and Katerynoslav
He graduated from the Kherson theological school and Odesa theological seminary. His teaching and scholarly work before 1917 was closely associated with Katerynoslav, its Prosvita society, archival commissions and research into the historical monuments of Zaporizhzhia. Bidnov treated Church sources not only as theological documents but also as materials for Ukrainian society's social and cultural history. [VB01; VB03]
His scholarly method required source criticism, comparison of testimony and bibliographic support. The history of the archival holdings he used itself became part of a history of losses: researchers note that a substantial portion of the Katerynoslav collections and his own materials was lost or confiscated in the twentieth century. This should be documented as distinct trajectories of holdings, rather than one story that “everything was destroyed”. [VB01; VB04]
Revolution, Kamianets and forced emigration
During the Ukrainian Revolution he worked in educational structures and was a professor at Kamianets-Podilskyi University. In late 1920 he left Kamianets with his son. At the Polish Łańcut camp he joined the Ukrainian People's University; later he taught in Kremenets. These stages preceded the Prague period but formed academic networks through which teachers and students maintained education without their own state infrastructure. [VB01]
“Rector” requires particular care: ESU reports his leadership of the émigré university in Łańcut in 1921. This is not rectorship of the Ukrainian Free University in Prague, so the biographical phrase cannot create a rector_of=R0034 record. [VB01]
The Ukrainian Free University's Prague period
From 1922 he taught the history of the Ukrainian Church at the Ukrainian Free University. ESU ends the Prague period in 1928, IEU in 1929; Polish research places his Warsaw chair in the academic year 1928/1929. The university in Prague, academy in Poděbrady and pedagogical institute were separate educational institutions with their own posts and programmes. [VB01; VB08; VB12]
A read TsDAHOU exhibition caption describes a dean's office letter to Bidnov dated 26 May 1924 about examinations: fonds 269, inventory 2, file 50, folio 57. Another caption describes an invitation to teach dated 2 June 1922, in the same file, folio 11. These are document descriptions, rather than read scans or a personnel order; the letters' full texts are not quoted here. [VB03]
Poděbrady and the Pedagogical Institute
Biographies describe teaching at the Economic Academy in Poděbrady and the M. Drahomanov Higher Pedagogical Institute in Prague. These brief descriptions do not establish particular semesters, employment fractions or classrooms. [VB01; VB02; VB08]
An earlier generalisation about students' participation in cultural debates was not confirmed by the cited letters. It is not presented here as fact. Reconstructing teaching responsibilities requires curricula, personnel lists and the institutions' own reports. [VB01; VB03]
Ukrainian Historical and Philological Society
Bidnov was among the initiators of the Ukrainian Historical and Philological Society in Prague in 1923 and, according to ESU, served as secretary in 1923–1929. This is institution R0041, distinct from its publication series R0090. The data must retain three levels: a society member or officeholder, the society as an organisation, and each publication volume as a separate physical object. [VB01]
Bidnov's activity in the society provided a platform for lectures on cultural history and source studies. Participation in its foundation should not automatically expand into “author of all volumes”; each issue of Pratsi requires separate bibliographic verification of its contents. [VB01; VB04]
Museum of Ukraine's Struggle for Independence
ESU names Bidnov as one of the founders of the Museum of Ukraine's Struggle for Independence in Prague. The museum (R0040) and its supporting society (R0050) must be distinguished; this biographical phrase does not establish a specific legal founding act. [VB01]
A read TsDAHOU caption describes a museum receipt dated 17 February 1926: fonds 269, inventory 2, file 50, folio 146. This is a separate documentary lead, rather than proof of participation in a founding meeting or permission to reproduce the document. The scan itself has not been read; authorship and rights to museum objects require separate checking. [VB10]
Works, pseudonyms and publications for reading
His output includes Church history, education, Zaporizhzhia sources and bibliography. The work on N. Korzh is dated 1926 by ESU and 1925 by the Great Ukrainian Encyclopedia (VUE); its title page has not been examined. The previous dossier attributed 88 and 114 items to the lists of 1932 and 1936, citing the now unavailable VB04. These figures are unverified and cannot underpin an automatic conclusion about numbers of new works. The ELPIS 2018 article refers to the 1932 list, pp. XLI–XLVI; IEU mentions a 1936 memorial publication. The lists themselves have not been read. [VB01; VB04; VB08; VB09; VB12]
A collection for reading about him exists: «Праведна душа. Василь Біднов у спогадах сучасників» (A Righteous Soul: Vasyl Bidnov in His Contemporaries' Recollections), edited by Mykola Chaban, Dnipro: Herda, 2021, 216 pp. Its metadata is confirmed by Serhii Svitlenko's read 2023 review, pp. 163–169; the book itself and its documents have not been read. Pseudonyms and attributions of individual articles need their own evidence; mention of a 1931 publication in Knyholiub does not mean that the issue was examined. [VB01; VB11]
The Warsaw period and burial
Sources date the move to Warsaw differently: 1928 in ESU and the Encyclopedia of the History of Ukraine (EIU), 1929 in IEU and VUE. The ELPIS 2018 article, p. 236, describes a chair in the general history of the Christian Church and liturgics given to Bidnov in academic year 1928/1929. This helps explain the transitional period but does not establish the exact moving day or contract date. [VB01; VB07; VB08; VB09; VB12]
The institution's name has been clarified: Studium Teologii Prawosławnej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. According to Res Historica 2023, p. 375, the Studium did not have faculty rights; p. 394, note 70, names Bidnov as a contracted extraordinary professor. The general phrase “professor of the theological faculty” is therefore insufficiently precise. He died on 1 April 1935 in Warsaw and, according to VUE, was buried in its Orthodox cemetery. The cemetery register, plot and present grave condition have not been checked; a precise marker and photographic rights remain unconfirmed. [VB08; VB09; VB13]
Archival gaps and new research routes
The read VUE article identifies documents in TsDAVO: fonds 4465, inventory 1, units 394–400. This is a secondary archival lead; neither the fonds inventory nor the files themselves have been examined. The Lviv reference 309/1/1092, attributed by the previous dossier to unavailable VB04, is currently unconfirmed. It cannot be presented as an already verified discovery. [VB04; VB09]
The research route connects Katerynoslav, Kamianets, Łańcut, Prague, Poděbrady and Warsaw. The map must distinguish the city of the described activity from an unestablished home or grave address. This review covered biographical articles, archival captions and selected pages of scholarly studies; complete archival files and books have not been read. [VB01; VB03; VB08; VB09; VB12; VB13]
