Relocation of the Ukrainian Free University from Vienna to Prague (1921)
Переїзд Українського вільного університету з Відня до Праги (1921) · Přesídlení Ukrajinské svobodné univerzity z Vídně do Prahy (1921) · 1920–1945
Essence
The Ukrainian Free University was established in Vienna early in 1921 and moved its academic activities to Prague after its first semester. The university’s institutional history and Czech National Library materials support an autumn 1921 relocation, while the exact transfer date remains unverified in original records. In Prague it cooperated with Charles University and benefited from Czechoslovak support for émigré education. R0102 is an event documenting the change of location; the institution itself has canonical record R0034. Neither a single historic building nor a specific legal re-registration can be asserted without contemporaneous documentation.

Moving between cities, rather than a second foundation
The Ukrainian Free University (UFU) was founded as an institution in Vienna in 1921, as attested by its official historical account [V102-01]. R0102 focuses exclusively on the transfer of its activities to Prague after the first semester. The concept of an event in the CMS is needed to avoid attributing the creation of a new university to the Prague move. A separate institutional entry already exists as R0034; it should describe different periods in the activities of one educational centre according to its own evidence model.
The Vienna phase of 1921
The university was established by Ukrainian professors and political émigrés, including participants in earlier state-building processes. The institutional chronology identifies January 1921 as the official opening and the summer semester as the start of teaching [V102-01]. Among its founders or initiators it names Mykhailo Hrushevsky and Oleksandr Kolessa, among others. This list of “founders” must not automatically be treated as a legal record: the retrospective account assigns historical roles that still need comparison with founding documents.
Why Prague
The UFU's official account links the move to changing centres of Ukrainian émigré life: after the first Vienna semester, Prague became a more favourable academic and civic setting [V102-01]. Czechoslovak state assistance to émigrés, President Masaryk's role and active student networks formed an institutional ecosystem [V102-04]. The economic and political motives of particular individuals must not be invented; only attested factors should be retained.
Dating: autumn and September 1921
An independent National Library of the Czech Republic publication describes the move as taking place in autumn 1921 [V102-04]. A separate UFU page specifies September 1921 [V102-02], while the principal history says “after the first semester” [V102-01]. These descriptions are compatible at the level of a season, but do not identify the same day. The event entry should retain date_start as approximately 1921-09 with precision=month and explicitly prohibit displaying an invented day of the month.
Charles University and premises
The UFU reports receiving teaching premises in Prague from Charles University [V102-01]. The interaction between the two institutions is attested by a source, but does not establish the use of a particular present-day building throughout 1921–1945. A historical map requires dated agreements, lecture timetables, permissions to use rooms and building identifiers in the relevant address systems.
Educational structure in the early Prague period
According to the university's official history, Prague had faculties of philosophy and of law and economics [V102-01]. The same account mentions more than 700 attendees in the first semester; another library publication speaks of almost a thousand [V102-04]. These figures must not be mechanically added together or labelled “graduates”, since they may represent different units of registration and points in time. The editors should request the original student registers.
Funding and Czechoslovak support policy
The UFU mentions financial support from the Czechoslovak Republic and its political leadership [V102-01]. The library's historical account places the university in the broader context of the Ruská pomocná akce, established for various groups of refugees [V102-04]. The direct accounting trail of assistance was not checked in this round, so no amounts, categories of recipients or volumes of support for a particular year are given.
Other university and academic institutions
The UFU's relocation formed part of the development of Ukrainian-language higher education in Czechoslovakia. However, the Ukrainian Economic Academy in Poděbrady (R0035) and the Drahomanov pedagogical institute (R0036) emerged as separate institutions [V102-07]. The graph should use thematic relationships of coexistence rather than same_legal_entity or was_renamed_to. Different functions, opening years and founding bodies must remain visible.
Archives of the university milieu
The Slavonic Library holds the fonds of the Ukrainian Academic Committee, associated with UFU rectors [V102-06]. The library bibliography lists a collection marking the UFU's 75th anniversary, but only its bibliographic record was inspected in this round [V102-05]. These are valuable leads for verification, rather than grounds for claiming that conference papers or archival minutes have been read. Requests for originals must identify the fonds and the particular inventory-unit number.
The event as a node on a cultural map
The relocation story can be shown as a historical Vienna–Prague line without a present-day map pin for a particular building. Alongside it, users should be able to open the profiles of the UFU R0034, Charles University R0085 and people associated with the UFU's early history. The editorial presentation needs to retain changes in teaching locations over time, without presenting all buildings as one unchanging address. The relevant documents still require verification.
