Rozbudova natsii – Ukrainian political periodical
«Розбудова нації» — часопис · Rozbudova natsii – ukrajinské politické periodikum · 1927–2026
Essence
Rozbudova natsii was a Ukrainian political periodical published in Prague between 1928 and 1934 as the organ of the Leadership of Ukrainian Nationalists. Czech library holdings and Ukrainian archival inventories identify individual volumes and issues. The magazine began before the founding of the OUN in 1929. Its ideological content calls for critical historical contextualization, documented authorship, and rights clearance before digital reuse.

Identifying the publication and the dossier's limits
Rozbudova natsii is a Ukrainian-language periodical published in Prague in 1928–1934, subtitled “Organ of the Leadership of Ukrainian Nationalists”. The Slavonic Library record at the National Library of the Czech Republic gives Praha as the publication place, the dates 1928–1934, shelfmark U 008189 and ISSN 1803-3059. The surviving bibliography distinguishes seven annual volumes. These attributes identify the journal as a separate object, rather than a generic name for a political current. [RN01; RN02]
This dossier describes the publication's history and sources for studying it, rather than endorsing the political ideologies expressed in its pages. The public website requires context for interwar radical nationalism, violence and conflicts in Central and Eastern Europe at that time. Material should be presented with historical distance and a clear distinction between authors' claims and modern historiographical conclusions. [RN03; RN07]
Prague as a printing and political space
Compared with some neighbouring states, the freer environment of the Czechoslovak capital enabled various Ukrainian émigré journals to be published. Rozbudova natsii's Prague imprint establishes a verified printing centre, but does not establish the editorial address, printing staff or actual transport method for every issue. The relevant geographical fields must remain empty until colophons and registration documents have been read. [RN01; RN05]
The legal framework for lawful publication in Czechoslovakia must be distinguished from unlawful distribution in some other states. The encyclopaedic account reports this difference for Poland and Romania, but a particular issue's route needs archival evidence — a postal envelope, register or confiscation report. [RN03]
Origins: the leadership before the OUN
The journal's beginning is dated to January 1928. The Leadership of Ukrainian Nationalists already existed as a political structure, whereas the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) is usually dated to 1929. Calling the journal an “OUN organ from 1928” is therefore historically inaccurate without explanation; it is better to reproduce the name printed in the original issue and describe organisational evolution separately. [RN01; RN03; RN06]
References to preparation of the first issue in late 1927 in later memoir publications are useful leads for correspondence, but do not equal original editorial minutes. The historical timeline may show “preparation, late 1927” separately from the documented first annual volume of 1928. [RN08]
Editor, publisher and authorial functions
The Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies names Volodymyr Martynets as editor-in-chief and Mykola Stsiborsky as publisher. These are different roles in the archival model: edited_by does not equal published_by or authorship of every article. Lists of contributors also name Dmytro Andriievsky, Yulian Vassiian, Yevhen Konovalets, Yevhen Onatsky and others, but their participation needs linking to particular materials. [RN03]
Treating a thematic mention of Stsiborsky as direct confirmation that he wrote every unsigned text is particularly dangerous. Individual articles could appear under pseudonyms or initials. Contents, signatures, notes and bibliographic indexes need checking before someone is added to the authorship graph. [RN03; RN07]
Annual volumes, numbering and physical sets
The Slavonic Library catalogue records annual volumes for 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934. TsDAHO fonds 408, inventory 1, file 164 describes the 1928 set with double issues 7–8 and 10–11; file 165 covers the 1929 annual volume with several combined issues. This establishes that “twelve issues a year” does not always mean twelve separate physical booklets. [RN01; RN04; RN05]
A separate aggregator contains digital sets for seven years, including the label “1934 Nos. 1–8”. A digital aggregate establishes a set's availability, rather than fully establishing the absence of other small publications or cover variants. The CMS must distinguish logical issue_number, physical_unit, combined_issue, holding and digital_file. [RN06]
Subjects and genres: historical reading without advocacy
The journal printed political, ideological, historical and publicistic texts created amid struggles for future Ukrainian statehood and sharp disputes among émigrés. They should be analysed as historical evidence of the respective authors' positions, rather than neutral accounts of reality. Studies of the Leadership of Ukrainian Nationalists' political press help investigate the publication's functions, but assessments require independent fact-checking. [RN07; RN09]
Important research themes include the language of political mobilisation, the construction of national identity, debates on models of the state and attitudes to other movements and states. Contemporary critical voices and modern historiography should also be considered, rather than quoting radical political declarations without context. [RN03; RN09]
Distribution beyond Czechoslovakia
According to the encyclopaedic account, the journal appeared lawfully in Czechoslovakia, while distribution in Poland and Romania was unlawful. Archival reports from 1929 mentioned in the study of the leadership's periodicals discuss dispatch plans and covers for distribution in western Ukrainian lands. These reports guide archival searches, but do not allow print runs to be calculated without full budgets and delivery records. [RN03; RN09]
The project map can show Prague as the city of publication, and other countries as historically mentioned circulation zones with lower geographical precision. Delivery arrows must not be shown as verified routes of particular people or couriers. [RN09]
Cessation and the political context of 1934
The encyclopaedia article reports that publication ceased in autumn 1934, linking this to police measures after the assassination of Polish minister Bronisław Pieracki in 1934. This causal link must be presented as the source's attribution, rather than a definitively established archival mechanism of cessation. Registration, censorship and publishing files may clarify the circumstances. [RN03]
The last available digital issues of 1934 are not identical to a legal act dissolving the editorial office. The CMS must distinguish “last catalogued issue”, “actual cessation of printing” and “official closure”. [RN01; RN06]
Significance for Ukrainian–Czech history
Rozbudova natsii shows that Prague was not only a university and literary centre, but also a political communications node of Ukrainian emigration. For a historical project, it offers a way to demonstrate the diversity and contradictions of émigré milieus, without merging university, democratic, socialist and nationalist organisations into one political whole. [RN03; RN10]
This object also requires heightened editorial care: the narrative of a particular periodical should be critical and documentary, with dates, library shelfmarks and open questions, without glorifying violence or transferring ideological clichés into present-day website captions. [RN09]
