Identity and legal distinction
Ukrajinská iniciativa v České republice, z. s. (UIČR), is a Ukrainian civic organisation in the Czech Republic. Its current website defines cultural, information and community objectives and publishes registration number 60448296. The Czech public register of legal entities establishes a registration history from 13 June 1994, with later changes to its legal form. [UI01; UI02]
This is a different entity from Sdružení Ukrajinců a příznivců Ukrajiny, z. s. (R0060), with registration number 00506605. An academic study of the history of Czechia's Ukrainian minority explains that the initiative arose after activists separated from the older association. The organisation's creation must not be equated with a legal renaming or the establishment of Ukrainian periodical publishing. [UI03; UI04]
The social context of the early 1990s
Political changes in Czechoslovakia in 1989 and the restoration of Ukraine's independence enabled organised civic life among the Ukrainian minority. The community was diverse in age, origin and employment; one association therefore cannot be presented as the sole representative of all Ukrainians in Czechia. [UI03]
Conditions in the early nineties should be studied through statutes, periodicals and meeting minutes. The organisation's later self-presentation is an important document of institutional memory, but is not an original founding record. The atlas distinguishes societal_context, founding_registered and editorial_project_start. [UI01; UI02; UI03]
Legal establishment in 1994
Czech corporate register data give the organisation's inception date as 13.06.1994. A later entry in the associations register or change of name does not prove the creation of a new institution. The original registration document, founding assembly and initial address remain a separate task for source verification. [UI02]
1994 should be accepted as registered_inception at the level of legal reference information, but should not be assigned to all programmes and festivals that may have had predecessors. The name “initiative” also does not imply authority to represent the Ukrainian state; this is a civic organisation interacting with official institutions. [UI01; UI02]
Relations with the older Ukrainian association
A sociological study conducted in 2006 by the Czech Academy of Sciences describes UIČR as an organisation that separated from Sdružení Ukrajinců in 1994. This history should not be simplified into a branch or renamed structure: the documents identify two different entities. [UI03]
Whether they shared participants, events or partnership projects at different times must be determined year by year. The database needs both a historical historically_separated_from link and a not_same_legal_entity_as rule between R0059 and R0060. Neither automatically proves a present-day conflict or current leadership of one association by the other. [UI03; UI04]
Porohy as a document of cultural life
UIČR currently presents Porohy as a regular periodical for Ukrainians in Czechia. The organisation's official page dates its beginning to 1992, other pages give 1993, and Porohy's editorial page gives 1994. The discrepancy may concern its prehistory, first issue or transfer of the publication; it remains unresolved without a set of originals. [UI01; UI05; UI06]
The most reliable model is a separate journal entity R0093, with dated issues and changing responsible publishers, while UIČR is the organisation that published it in certain years. A founding_year=1992 field in the main table would be too strong an assertion; parallel source assertions must be retained. [UI01; UI05; UI06]
Dům národnostních menšin: address and available infrastructure
UIČR's current contact address published on its website is Dům národnostních menšin, Vocelova 3, Praha 2, with legal building designation Vocelova 602/3. This address corresponds to canonical entity R0076. It may be a geographical point of public contact, but does not prove that UIČR owns the building or has been there continuously since 1994. [UI01; UI07]
DNM's history states that the building opened to the public in 2007; early Porohy editorial offices therefore had other addresses that need reconstructing issue by issue. Integration requires an address validity date: current_contact_at=2026, historic_office_before_2007=UNKNOWN. [UI01; UI07]
Transparency and project documentation
The Czech state register of contracts contains individual agreements with this organisation, where its registration number serves as an exact legal identifier. A 2022 document, for example, concerns a project on Ukrainian refugees' experiences. Such a record confirms the legal party and subject of a particular agreement, but does not establish its completion or the project's actual reach without further reports. [UI08]
A historical archive should compare public contracts, event programmes, journal issues and registration changes. Rights to reuse photographs, participants' manuscripts and materials containing personal data must be assessed separately from the document's public accessibility. [UI08]
Value for a bilingual cultural website
UIČR bridges the history of the Ukrainian diaspora and contemporary mechanisms of civic life. The most valuable presentation is an open institutional timeline explaining when the organisation, journal, legal address and partners changed independently of one another. [UI01; UI03; UI05]
The website may link R0059 to R0093 (Porohy) and R0076 (DNM), but must not mechanically declare it the legal successor of the interwar Ukrainian Student Community of Prague. Visitors should see the difference between confirmed legal identity and the wider Ukrainian community in Czechia. [UI02; UI07]
