Essence

Nataliia Livytska-Kholodna (1902–2005) was a Ukrainian émigré poet and translator educated in Prague and active in the Poděbrady literary milieu. She published Fire and Ashes (1934) and Seven Letters (1937) in Warsaw. Her career illuminates women's authorship and cross-border Ukrainian cultural networks.

Family and emigration after the Ukrainian People's Republic's fall

The poet grew up in the family of Andrii Livytskyi, a Ukrainian People's Republic figure. Her family environment shaped experiences of war, forced displacement, Ukrainian statehood culture and private vulnerability. Kinship is a confirmed fact, but family history must not automatically assign her personal political offices or participation in particular Ukrainian People's Republic actions. [NL01; NL02]

The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (ESU) and Orysia Lehka date the beginning of the Polish emigration phase to 1920; Lehka names Warsaw and then Tarnów. A short dictionary reprint instead gives 1919; border-crossing documents have not been read. An almanac associated with the Tarnów milieu is named in sources as «Сонцесвіт» or «Сонцецвіт». Its cover reproduction in Nashe zhyttia for 1992 visibly reads «Сонцецвіт», and the caption dates publication to 1922. ESU also names 1922, but the text of the same Drazhevska article gives 1921. Lehka mentions a debut in Vienna's Volia without an exact year. Priority of the 1922 publication is therefore not considered established; neither the Volia issue nor the full almanac has been read. [NL01; NL08; NL09; NL13]

Poděbrady, Prague and the educational route

Reference accounts associate her with Poděbrady from 1922. The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory names matriculation examinations and entry into Romance studies at Charles University in 1923; Boichuk and Lehka agree on the beginning of Prague studies. ESU reports graduation from Charles University in 1927, while other biographical accounts describe continued education in Warsaw. Student records and diplomas have not been read; these details support educational context, rather than an exact residence or classroom marker. [NL01; NL03; NL07; NL09]

The town of Poděbrady is not the name of a separate educational institution. Matriculation courses, student lists, family residence and meeting places require independent verification. An emotional image of Poděbrady as a place of poetic formation may be used in an editorial essay, but the map should show only confirmed objects. [NL03]

Creative circles: acquaintance, cooperation and a literary-critical category

In Prague and Poděbrady, Livytska-Kholodna had contact with Ukrainian émigré poets, among whom scholarly reference works name Yevhen Malaniuk and Yurii Darahan. This establishes literary acquaintance and a shared milieu, but does not exhaust the content of personal relationships: friendship, romantic relationships and correspondence should be recorded only from specific testimony and with appropriate ethical care. [NL02; NL03]

The Prague School did not exist as a registered organisation with membership lists. The catalogue relationship to R0099 should be associated_with_literary_movement; the poet's biography must not automatically repeat male authors' biographies or diminish her own aesthetics. [NL02; NL06]

The Kholodnyi family and women's social role

The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory dates her marriage to Petro Kholodnyi the younger to 1924; Lehka specifies August. The institute gives daughter Leonida's birth as 1925; Lehka mentions the daughter without a separately dated year. ESU confirms the marital relationship, rather than the marriage date. Family civil records have not been read; marriage alone does not prove that her husband designed every book of hers. [NL01; NL03; NL09]

Women's professional networks and publishing initiatives require separate study. Encyclopedic sources discuss her activity in the women's movement, editing or cooperation with Zhinka and participation in organisations during the American period. Office titles, terms and distribution of editorial responsibility must be checked against periodical issues, rather than a general phrase that she “worked for the journal”. [NL01; NL02]

Warsaw, Romance studies and an institutional turn

Biographical sources name a move to Warsaw in 1927. Orysia Lehka reports completion of Romance studies at Warsaw University with a master's degree in January 1933. The IEU text read contains neither university studies nor the year 1933, so this educational date must be cited to Lehka. ESU's report of Charles University graduation in 1927 does not establish the number of degrees or formal status of both phases without diplomas and personal files. [NL01; NL02; NL09]

In 1929 she was among the organisers of Warsaw's Tank group; the later publishing and journal context concerns the My group and Variah. These organisational links need a specific timeline in the biographical graph. The sources do not support a formula of “co-founder of every circle and publisher”. [NL02; NL03]

«Вогонь і попіл» (1934): love as a self-defined poetics

The first separate collection, «Вогонь і попіл», appeared in Warsaw in 1934. The book should be studied as her own artistic voice, rather than a derivative of the Prague School's male “heroic” line. The scholarly library's bibliographic overview confirms Warsaw printing and records varied reception of erotic lyric poetry. Historical debate about women's authorship is better presented through dated reviews, without present-day judgments imposed on the past. [NL01; NL06]

Literary-critical descriptions of the cycles suggest a reading of the transition from the birth of feeling to loss and “ash”. This is an interpretation of composition that must be compared with the first edition's contents before creating an interactive book structure. Canonical R0097 in the base register should be used as a Publication, without creating a duplicate for a variant spelling of the title. [NL06]

«Сім літер» (1937) and a change in civic tone

The second Warsaw collection, «Сім літер», appeared in 1937. The Odesa National Scientific Library's bibliographic index gives a specific description: Warsaw, Variah, 1937, 66 pages. This is a better level of evidence than a retelling of “a second book about Ukraine”. Overviews read it as a text about memory and belonging to a lost homeland. [NL01; NL05; NL06]

The Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine catalogue identifies Nova khata for 1938, no. 3: Iryna Pavlykovska's review of «Сім літер» on p. 1 and Lidiia Burachynska's interview on p. 3. These two texts have not been read in full. Separately, Ivanna Brusna's contemporary review in Zhinka of 1 February 1938, no. 3, p. 4, has been read alongside a report of TOPIZh's third prize. This is a different author and a different journal; they must not be confused with Nova khata materials. [NL04; NL12]

The Second World War, the United States and later work

ESU, Boichuk and Lehka date the start of life in the USA to 1950 after the postwar German phase. Drazhevska's anniversary account of 1992 instead places departure for America during wartime; a migration document resolving the discrepancy has not been read. «Шлях велетня» appeared in 1955; Odesa's bibliographic reference gives New York, publisher Mykhailo Boretskyi and 143 pages. The book itself has not been read. The Ukrainian National Women's League of America published «Поезії старі й нові» in 1986; its own periodical reports this and names Bohdan Boichuk as compiler. Liubov Drazhevska's contemporary report dates presentation of the award for the 1986 publication to 11 April 1987 in New York. The book's year, award cycle and ceremony must be distinguished. [NL01; NL05; NL07; NL09; NL11; NL13; NL14]

The poet's biography spans several cultural spaces, rather than one émigré circle. Prague → Warsaw → postwar Germany → USA → Canada should be marked as life phases with different levels of confirmation. A final residence is not automatically a burial place, so an exact memorial pin requires a separate reference. [NL01]

Press, correspondence and personal testimony

The Vernadskyi National Library catalogue records Nova khata for 1938, no. 3, with material on «Сім літер» and a conversation with the poet. These are bibliographic locators of a review and interview whose contents have not been checked: the issue PDF returned 403. The text read in Zhinka for 1938 is a separate review, rather than the poet's interview answers. Materials about the author are also not evidence that she worked on these journals' editorial staff. [NL04; NL12]

An interactive exhibition should present two dimensions of complete authorship, rather than oppose a “private woman” and a “civic poet”. Personal addresses, emotional relationships and authorial dedications should remain outside the public graph without specific sources. [NL06; NL07]
