Sahaidak – Yurii Darahan
«Сагайдак» Юрія Дарагана · Sahajdak – Jurij Darahan · 1922–2023
Essence
*Sahaidak* is a poetry collection by Yurii Darahan, published in Prague in 1925 by the Ukrainian Civic Publishing Fund. A library record identifies the volume as Book One, containing poems from 1922–1924 and comprising 64 pages. Recent scholarship reassesses its release chronology in comparison with Yevhen Malaniuk’s *Stylet i stylos*.

Identifying the work and the particular edition
Sahaidak: Poems. Book One: 1922–1924, by Yurii Darahan (R0010); Prague, Ukrainian Civic Publishing Fund (R0051), 1925, 64 pages, according to the Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine's bibliographic description. The Czech search title is Sahajdak. Básně, and the English title Sahaidak: Poems. The work's title must not be translated as a generic name for a weapon, since it is the edition's proper title. [SD01; SD02]
R0087 must retain the identity of the particular 1925 edition (PublicationEdition), alongside the related abstract literary work (Work) and library copy (Holding). The digitised copy of 2021 described by the library is not a new authorial edition and does not change the published_in 1925 event. The title page says “Book One”; this does not establish the existence of a printed “Book Two” — the known body of research identifies the collection as Darahan's only book published in his lifetime. [SD01; SD03]
Yurii Darahan's biographical and cultural context
Darahan belonged to the generation of artists whose lives were changed by the First World War, revolutionary events and the defeat of the Ukrainian National Republic. Literary periodicals, including Veselka, emerged in Polish camps for interned Ukrainian soldiers. In emigration, he participated in the Prague cultural milieu that later literary scholarship grouped under “Prague School of Poets” (R0099). The school concept itself developed in later criticism, rather than being established by membership statutes. [SD03; SD04]
The poet died on 17 March 1926 in a sanatorium near Prague; he was buried at Olšany Cemetery, but researchers report that his grave has not survived. For mapping R0087, a published_at_place Praha node should be created, without placing a “Darahan's grave” pin in a particular section in the absence of a current register entry. [SD04]
The Prague publishing milieu
The National Library records the collection's publication by the Ukrainian Civic Publishing Fund (R0051). A 2023 study draws attention to an additional note on the title-page verso: “Hr. Chuprynka Foundation. No. 2”. This should be entered as a publishing or series note, rather than unilaterally replacing the principal publisher with another organisation. The legal relations between the fund and foundation can be established only through reports, programmes or an original agreement. [SD01; SD02]
The fund's publishing reports for 1925–1926 have confirmed archival locators at TsDAHOU: fonds 269, inventory 1, file 1106. This is an appropriate direction for clarifying print runs, expenditure and printing dates. The print run must not be stated as an established quantity before the relevant folios are inspected. [SD05]
The collection's structure and poetic themes
The subtitle “Poems 1922–1924” concerns the period when the poems were written, rather than the book's publication year. Researchers identify images of the princely and Cossack past, the steppe, historical memory, experiences of exile and connections with Ukrainian nature. This thematic account is a literary-critical generalisation; the particular list of cycles and the order of poems need to be recorded from the scanned copy, checking every page. [SD02; SD06]
The book combines an individual lyric voice with motifs shared by émigré poetry. The claim that all other Prague School authors followed Darahan specifically belongs to the history of literary-critical assessments and cannot be presented as an undisputed causal fact. [SD02]
Dating publication: 1925 and the limits of precision
The bibliographic date “1925” is confirmed by title-page information and library registration. However, the month when readers actually received the book requires careful consideration. Mykola Krupach's scholarly article (2023) compares publishing discussions in spring 1925, correspondence, memoirs and reviews. One argument places the book's appearance in late autumn 1925; indirect evidence is a postcard from Valeriia O’Connor-Vilinska dated 11 November 1925, recounted by the researcher through L. Kutsenko's publication. [SD02]
The same body of literary memoirs nevertheless contains conflicting reports about authorial proofreading, and even publication after Darahan's death. The database should not assign an exact sale or presentation date. A copy bearing a contemporary library stamp, the postcard archive and a publisher's report are needed; until then, a cautious public formulation is “Prague, 1925; actual distribution probably towards the end of the year”. [SD02]
Sahaidak and Stylet i stylos: why sequence matters
Yevhen Malaniuk published Stylet i stylos (R0094) in Poděbrady in 1925. Citing Malaniuk's letter to Dmytro Dontsov of 15 April 1925 and contemporary reviews, Krupach argues that Malaniuk's collection appeared before Sahaidak. This is a historiographical conclusion with specified reasoning, rather than a universal statement about who was the “first poet” artistically. [SD02; SD07]
Other assessments existed among literary scholars, presenting Darahan as the initiator of certain Prague School motifs. These must be shown as attributed critical positions, rather than equating “printed earlier” with “more influential” or “most outstanding”. The chronology of printing does not establish artistic primacy or the direction of influence. [SD02]
Reception: evidence from 1925–1926
Krupach's published study allows early notices of the book's appearance to be distinguished from later assessments. Mykyta Shapoval prepared a response associated with Sahaidak; a short publication notice appeared in the December 1925 Studentskyi visnyk. The issue identifiers and pages of these testimonies need to be established before they are quoted as verbatim contemporary public reactions. [SD02]
A separate subject is the periodical press in which Darahan published before the book, and the Veselka almanac. The distinction between a poem's composition date, periodical publication and inclusion in a book must be retained as three events supported by different sources. [SD02; SD06]
Preservation of a copy and digital reproduction
The Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine reports that the original printed edition is held at the library and that the electronic copy was created in 2021. This record is the strongest available evidence for bibliographic fields — title, authorship, city, publisher, year and extent. A digital copy does not automatically permit publication of the entire text on one's own website; rights to the scan, modern edition and scholarly commentary should be checked separately. [SD01]
The recommendation is to create a Source for the catalogue record, a Collection for the library holdings, Media for an authorised cover and Publication R0087 for the edition. If scan use is permitted, retain its original caption and the digital file's provenance. [SD01]
People, institutions and places in one edition's history
The reliably established core relationships are written_by with Darahan R0010, published_by with R0051, published_in_city with Prague, and associated_with_literary_movement with R0099 as a secondary literary-critical classification. The Chuprynka Foundation is a separate publishing entity without a canonical ID at present; until it is entered, use the textual locator UNRESOLVED_ENTITY. [SD01; SD02]
A shared milieu with Malaniuk R0015 is established, but a coauthored_with edge must not be created. Both books appeared in 1925, yet they were separate projects with different printing locations and publishing structures. [SD02]
Personal stories without reconstructed dialogue
The report of Valeriia O’Connor-Vilinska's postcard of 11 November 1925 could offer a particularly interesting story about a new book's journey from author to reader. At this stage, what is known is secondary quotation in a scholarly article, rather than an inspected original postcard. The text can therefore mention the existence of that account and the need to establish the original's repository, but must not publish a “letter from Darahan” or an invented reply. [SD02]
