Перепоховання Олександра Олеся та Віри Кандиби у Києві (29.01.2017) · Nové pohřbení Oleksandra Olese a Viry Kandybové v Kyjevě (29. 1. 2017) · 1944–2017
Essence
The remains of Ukrainian poet Oleksandr Oles (Kandyba) and his wife Vira were reburied in Kyiv on 29 January 2017 after transfer from Prague. Ukraine’s government had issued order 33-r on 18 January, and the Czech Embassy reported a memorial service at Saint Volodymyr’s Cathedral and burial at Lukianivske Cemetery. R0107 covers the reburial event, distinct from the poet’s biography R0018. Czech exhumation records, exact grave plots and image permissions remain unverified.

The historical event and the people
R0107 identifies a single dated memorial process involving the poet Oleksandr Oles (O. Kandyba) and his wife Vira Antonivna Kandyba. The poet has a separate biographical record, R0018. The state decision, international transport of remains, religious service and burial in Kyiv are successive components, rather than identical points in time. [O107-01; O107-02]
The Prague exile context
After emigrating, Oles lived in Czechoslovakia, died in 1944 and was buried in Prague's Olšany Cemetery. Biography, burial practices and literary memory connect the two states here. R0107 should not retell his entire creative life, which belongs in the biographical dossier R0018. [O107-03; O107-04]
The reasons for exhumation and responsible description
Media reports linked the Prague exhumation to use of the burial plot; some give detailed family circumstances. However, Czech legal documents concerning that particular plot have not been examined. Editors should not make personal accusations or reproduce private addresses; a documented procedure is needed. [O107-03; O107-04]
The government decision of 18 January
Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers order No. 33-r of 18 January 2017 establishes the state decision to rebury the remains of Oleksandr Oles and Vira Kandyba within the Lukianivka historical and memorial reserve. The official legislation database shows an amended version dated 25 January. This is the date of a state act, rather than the ceremony itself. [O107-01]
Transport and state coordination
Moving the remains from Czechia to Ukraine involved an interstate and municipal process. The government act outlined responsibilities for transport and burial; detailed transport documents, sanitary permits and register actions were not checked in this research phase. The CMS must retain state_decision_ref and transport_event separately from the memorial date. [O107-01; O107-02]
29 January: the farewell ceremony
The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Kyiv reported a memorial service on 29 January 2017 at St Volodymyr's Cathedral and Ambassador Radek Matula's participation. This official publication reliably documents the ceremony's date, but is not a court document about the Prague burial plot. [O107-02]
Reburial at Lukianivka Cemetery
The Czech embassy and contemporary DW and Ukrainska Pravda publications report the reburial on 29 January 2017 at Kyiv's Lukianivka Cemetery. The CMS geographic object should describe the memorial cemetery grounds, without inventing precise grave coordinates in the absence of burial archives. [O107-02; O107-03; O107-04]
Community representatives
The Czech embassy's official notice explicitly mentions a Czech diplomatic representative. Other ceremony participants appear in journalistic reports; their roles in the relevant part of the event require verification before personal graph relationships are created. Attendance does not amount to organising the reburial or establish legal responsibility. [O107-02; O107-04]
Memory between two capitals
This is the specific relocation of two people's remains between two cities, rather than a story of “the return of the entire Ukrainian emigration”. The Praha–Kyiv relationship must be modelled as a directed relocation, with historical roles for the original burial and reburial destination. Death dates, the relocation decision and burial require separate time fields. [O107-01; O107-02]
The limits of documentary verification
The official government order and embassy notice were examined as web sources. Czech notarial, cemetery and permit files, the full exhumation record and a memorial plan of the grave were not inspected. The existence of media photographs of the funeral does not confer rights to reuse them. [O107-01; O107-05]
