Carolinum and Charles University: Ukrainian Students and the UFU
The historic premises of Charles University and the Ukrainian academic world: Oleh Kandyba (Olzhych) studied here in 1926–1929. The Ukrainian Free University (UFU) is a separate institution, and the dossier does not tie its solemn Prague opening of 23 October 1921 to the Carolinum.
According to dossier R0034, the solemn Prague period of the UFU began on 23 October 1921; the dossier does not name the venue. The Carolinum, Charles University and the UFU are separate entities (R0085). It is documented that Oleh Kandyba (Olzhych) studied at Charles University in 1926–1929, but his lecture hall is not established.
Current address records of the complex: Ovocný trh 3 (buffet) and Ovocný trh 560/5 (rectorate) (CU03, CU04). The dossier does not prove a link between specific Carolinum premises and the UFU.
Analysis of spatial transformation
What changed in the urban setting
In 1945 the UFU moved its activity to Munich (R0034). Charles University resumed work in 1945 after Czech universities were closed in November 1939 (R0085).
What is known about preservation
The Carolinum has been linked to the university since 1383, and its Baroque rebuilding was completed in 1718 (R0085). Which premises were used by Ukrainian students or the UFU is not known.
Significance for contemporary memory
The Carolinum is where the history of Charles University and of Ukrainian students intersect; specific stories (the UFU, Olzhych) must be told separately according to their sources.
