Significance
Antonín Barcal (Antonín Jan Barcal, 1847–1927) was a Czech tenor who sang at the Kyiv Opera in the 1870s and then for many years in Moscow. His Kyiv years are part of the presence of Czech musicians in the operatic life of the Russian Empire, including Ukraine. [BAR01; BAR02]
Life
Barcal was born on 25 May 1847 in České Budějovice, began studying singing in Vienna in 1865, first performed at a concert of the Pan-Slavic society in Vienna in 1867 and later appeared at the Provisional Theatre in Prague; he died on 24 June 1927 in Šumperk. [BAR01] In 1878–1902 he was a member of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (also director from 1882) and in 1898–1921 headed the opera class of the Moscow Conservatory; in 1921 he returned to Bohemia in poor health. [BAR01]
Ukrainian connection
According to the encyclopedia, in June 1870 Prince Golitsyn invited Barcal to sing folk songs at five concerts in Russia (the cities are not named); after an enthusiastic reception he won an engagement with the Kyiv opera company. [BAR02] In 1873 and 1874 he toured with the Kyiv company to the summer theatre in Odesa, in 1874 he went to the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg to replace the first tenor, and in 1875 he sang in Kyiv again. [BAR02] Czech Wikipedia gives the same sequence briefly: first performance in Russia in 1870, then the Kyiv opera, St Petersburg and a return to Kyiv. [BAR01]
Discrepancies in sources
Start of the Kyiv engagement: Czech Wikipedia merely places it after the 1870 performance, the encyclopedia after the five concerts, with no dates. Odesa: only the encyclopedia names the tours of 1873 and 1874; Czech Wikipedia does not mention it. [BAR01; BAR02]
The Ukrainian component is limited to a few seasons in the 1870s; the sources name neither the Kyiv theatre nor the number of seasons. The name is spelled Barcal, Barzal, Anton Ivanovich Barcal (Anton Bartsal). Full primary sources (posters, theatre archives) were not checked. [BAR01; BAR02]
